Recently, we chatted with Natalie, a housesitter from Melbourne, Australia. She shared some beautiful pictures of her adventures and how she petsits around Melbourne without applying for any house-sitting jobs.
Tell us a little about yourself—who you are, where you are from, and whether you do it full-time or sporadically.
I started house/pet sitting over 15 years ago for family and friends, which I have recently turned into a small business based in Melbourne. I strive to achieve the goal of taking care of beloved pets in their home environment to avoid the stress of overcrowded kennels.
How many housesits have you had and where?
I have lost count of how many house-sitting jobs I have completed over the years in Melbourne.
Why do you housesit? What is the primary motivation?
I love spending time with all of my furry friends I have met over the years, and I thoroughly enjoy exploring my new area.
How did you find out about housesitting?
Over the years, family and friends have requested my services. So, if people want to know how to find a house sitter, they usually email me, and we book them in.
Pros of House Sitting?
When I start a new pet-sitting job, it always feels like a holiday. I enjoy checking out the local shops and cafes.
Cons of House Sitting?
Having to say goodbye to my furry friends at the end of each pet-sitting job is always challenging, also living out of a suitcase.
What’s been the biggest or best adventure so far?
Every pet-sitting job feels like a new adventure.
How much luggage do you travel with?
I’m an over-packer so I usually bring more than I need!😬
Was it hard for you to secure your first house-sitting gig?
I have never applied for house/pet sitting jobs; my clients have always contacted me for my services.
Did you ever have any unusual pets to take care of or responsibilities that were out of the norm?
Hermit Crabs!
What Has Been Your Favorite House Sit?
I love my job! Over the years, I have met the most beautiful dogs and cats; I honestly couldn’t pick a favorite.
Any Unusual House Sits?
One of my clients was renovating their home while I was housesitting, so I ended up having to become the project manager during my stay.
Tips for Others Wanting to Get Started?I would offer to look after family and friends’ pets to build up their resumes and profile.

The opportunity to experience different homes, cultures, and communities has been extraordinary.
I’ve connected with homeowners seeking reliable sitters through house-sitting platforms like Aussie House Sitters and Trusted House Sitters. This unique way of living has allowed me to save money on accommodation, explore new cultures, and meet new people.
Being a member of these platforms has broadened my horizons and opened doors to short- and long-term house-sitting jobs. I’ve found joy in providing excellent pet care and ensuring the home is well-maintained.
